PET Image Reconstruction
نویسنده
چکیده
Positron emission tomography (PET) scanners collect measurements of a patient’s in vivo radiotracer distribution. These measurements are reconstructed into cross-sectional images. Tomographic image reconstruction forms images of functional information in nuclear medicine applications and the same principles can be applied to modalities such as X-ray computed tomography. This chapter provides a brief introduction into tomographic image reconstruction and outlines the current, commonly applied methods for PET. This chapter begins with an overview of data acquisition in PET in 2-D and 3-D mode. The reconstruction methods presented in this chapter are divided into analytic and iterative approaches. Analytic reconstruction methods offer a direct mathematical solution for the formation of an image (section II, III). Iterative methods are based on a more accurate description of the imaging process resulting in a more complicated mathematical solution requiring multiple steps to arrive at an image (section IV). Finally, section V offers an introduction into the tradeoffs between the varying methods and provides some guidance on how to access the quality of a reconstruction algorithm.

Introduction: An efficient method of tomographic imaging in nuclear medicine is positron emission tomography (PET). Compared to SPECT, PET has the advantages of higher levels of sensitivity, spatial resolution and more accurate quantification. However, high noise levels in the image limit its diagnostic utility. Noise removal in nuclear medicine is traditionally based on Fourier decomposition o...
متن کاملAdvances in PET Image Reconstruction.
Until recently, the most widely used methods for image reconstruction were direct analytic techniques. Iterative techniques, although computationally much more intensive, produce improved images (principally arising from more accurate modeling of the acquired projection data), enabling these techniques to replace analytic techniques not only in research settings but also in the clinic. This art...
متن کاملMulti-modality tomographic image reconstruction using mesh modeling
In this paper we investigate a mesh-modeling approach for multi-modality image reconstruction. In the proposed approach a mesh model uses information obtained from an anatomical MR image to aid in reconstruction of PET images. The aim is to improve spatial resolution and quantitative accuracy of the PET image by using anatomical boundary information from the MR image. The mesh approach accompli...
